DCU Win at Lanier Academy Cup

August 25, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

The Fall 2010 Soccer Season got off to a great start for Dawson County United Soccer Club. At the Lanier Academy Cup, held at Allen Creek Soccer Complex in Gainesville, the DCU academy soccer teams competed in seven divisions and ended up with 4 teams reaching semi-finals, 3 teams making the finals, and two of the teams winning out.

The DCU U10 Boys made a very strong showing, coming out of group play as the number one seed in their division. Exiting the group stage as the top seed earned DCU U10 boys a match with the host team from Lanier Soccer Academy in the semi-finals. The DCU boys stormed out to a 4-0 lead and looked like they were on their way to the finals, but the Lanier Sharks fought back and tied the game at 4-4, sending it to overtime. In overtime, Lanier were able to score the winning goal, earning them a hard fought victory. A difficult loss for the DCU boys, but their bright performances in the  tournament are definitely something to build on.

The DCU U12 Girls made it to the finals in their age group, where they faced the number one ranked team from Tennessee, the Express 99 Red. Express were a familiar oppenent for the DCU girls, as they had faced them in the group stage of the tournament, with the DCU Girls winning a thrilling 4-3 victory which earned them the number 1 seed in their group. In the finals, the DCU U12 girls fought hard but eventually succumbed to grueling heat and fell to a 5-1 defeat. It was not the way the team wanted to end the tournament, but it has given them a tremendous amount of momentum heading into the season.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the weekend, entering their very first ever tournament, the DCU U9 Girls won the championship in their age group. The resounding victory was a testament to all of the hard work that players have been putting in. Shaking off nerves and overcoming the lack of any previous big tournament experience, the DCU U9 girls finished as the number one seed in their group on route to the championship. They showed real heart and determination, having to come from behind to win in every game. The finals were no different, as DCU quickly fell to a 0-2 deficit to the USC Hardrollers before battling back to a 4-2 victory. DCU were outsized by the USC Hardrollers, but that did not intimidate the girls as they continued to work hard until the victory was theirs. The team showed tremendous growth and winning the title is a great achievement for such a young team.

In one the most entertaining games of the weekend, the DCU U10 girls won the U10 championship in a thrilling overtime finals match-up. After sailing through the group stage with impressive wins of 8-1 and 11-0, the DCU U10 girls battled their way through a grueling semi-final against Decula, earning them a much anticipated match-up with the Georgia Rush U10 Girls. Each team had a lot of momentum, and were playing at the top of their game. It was a classic match-up of big club vs. little club, and the DCU U1o Girls stormed out to a 2-0 lead. The Rush Girls then worked their way back to a 3-2 lead and looked to have the game sewn up. Exhausted, but not to be denied, the DCU U10 Girls snuck in the equalizer with 20 seconds left in the game. Refusing to back down, the DCU girls continued to work hard in the first overtime period, and earned a free kick just outside of the GA Rush goal box. It resulted in a goal which sent the spectators and players into an overwhelming showing of emotion. Minutes before it had seemed that all was lost, but they stuck together and won the championship.

Congratulations to all of the teams that entered the tournament. What a great way to start the soccer season!

U10 Boys Place First at AFU Classic

May 7, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

The DCU Red U10 Academy Boys placed first in the Gold Division of the 2010 AFU Academy Classic.

On a warm North Georgia Soccer weekend, the boys fought their way to two opening day victories on Saturday, each by a margin of only one goal. In a very physical battle, DCU defeated the #1 ranked team from Alabama 3-2 in a game which they had to come back from a 1-2 first half deficit. In the second game, the boys had a difficult test against the tournament host, AFU, one of the biggest clubs in North Georgia Soccer. After going out to 4-1 lead, the DCU Red U10 Academy Boys held on for a 5-4 win.

Sunday saw the DCU Red U10 Academy Boys playing their best soccer season as the posted a convincing 7-1 victory over the Cheerokee Impact U10 Academy Soccer. The win put the DCU boys in the finals, which would be a rematch with AFU. Understanding the challenge in front of them, and remembering how difficult their group match was with AFU, the DCU Red U10 Academy Boys came started strong and exploded to a 5-0 lead within the first 10 minutes of the game.

It was a wonderful display of passing and team work that provide the quick lead. From that point on, the boys cruised to a 7-3 victory. It was a great way for the DCU Red U10 Academy Boys to end a very successful Academy Soccer season. As season which saw them win two tournaments, and spend the entire time ranked within the top 15 in the state.
